The REAL Death Of The Music Industry

In January, Bain & Company produced the following chart as part of their report on “Publishing in the Digital Age” (PDF):

Music Industry

Then on Tuesday, someone posted it on Flickr. Subsequently, Peter Kafka of Wall Street Journal's MediaMemo noticed it and passed it along to Jay Yarow, who made it Business Insider’s Chart of the Day on Wednesday, citing Kafka and the Flickr post. On Thursday, the excellent John Gruber at Daring Fireball linked to it and between those two postings the chart garnered a fair bit of attention, including from the likes of apparent digital music expert Bob Lefsetz (“First in Music Analysis”). No one seems to have tracked it back to the original source  nor noticed what happened to catch my eye straight away:

This chart sucks.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has left the club by mutual consent.

Hodgson, 63, had won only seven of their 20 Premier League games since he took over from Rafael Benitez in July 2010 with the club 12th in the table.

Former player and manager Kenny Dalglish has been placed in charge until the end of the season.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception First Look

We watch as Naughty Dog drops Nathan Drake in even bigger trouble in the third entry of the Uncharted series.

One of the shining stars in the PlayStation 3's stable of exclusive franchises is the Uncharted series from Naughty Dog. The games have offered a modern, playable twist on the heroic adventuring of such classic action films as Raiders of the Lost Ark and the adventure serials that inspired it. While the original Uncharted was a solid debut for the series, Uncharted 2 was a masterpiece that cemented the franchise as one of the highlights of the PlayStation library this generation. Given the franchise's popularity so far, it's no surprise that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception would be announced. However, what is pleasantly surprising is that Naughty Dog isn't taking a predictable route in creating Nathan Drake's latest adventure. We had the opportunity to chat with some members of the team at a recent press event that gave us a look at roughly 10 minutes of gameplay from the sequel, which is already looking fantastic.

Do these figures show that consoles are finally a living room essential?

Market research company Nielsen reckons we spend at least a third of our console time doing other things than gaming...

Wii fun

It used to be that games consoles were for just one thing. Gaming. But ever since the PlayStation 2 shipped with an internet connection and the capacity to play DVDs (Sega's earlier Dreamcast had the former, but not the latter), manufacturers have had their beady eye on the living room. Now it seems, the leading machines have completed their arduous and extremely expensive journey from teen bedroom to family lounge.

Are cut-scenes ruining video-game stories?

Characters suddenly become unplayable as the player becomes aware of new pieces of information. Armed with that knowledge, she embarks on the next quest or level and gets right back into the action.

At first glance, this completely makes sense. After all, if games want to tell a story they need to have some type of narrative anchor, and cut-scenes are a great way to do that.

Since the mid 1990s, games have used pieces of cinematic animation to bridge levels and create motivation to drive the story forward, which demonstrates that the industry clearly wants to tell stories. Ever since the plot moved on from “the princess is in another castle,” games have wanted to create new forms of narrative that drive the player forward.

Cut-scenes can provide a default way of showing the personality of a character, which can be a particularly fickle trait in something as subjective as gaming. They provide a canon, stability, and a solid story arc in a game filled with thousands of options for each player.

But is it time for the industry to outgrow cut-scenes?

Edenbridge's Wayne Rooney guy

Love cheat footie star Wayne Rooney will be burned at the stake in Kent, we can reveal today.

Well, sort of...

Villagers in Edenbridge found out this morning it’s Manchester United’s moneybags footballer who’s been chosen for a ritual roasting.

The 30ft tall effigy took a week to make out of a steel frame, wire, hardboard and paper.

It will be torched on Guy Fawkes night at Lingfield Road's Recreation Ground, with fireworks starting at 8:30pm

Do Games Need Their Own Oprah?

Oprah

Last year, during a discussion on civil rights, segregation, and racism in my U.S. History class, a Hispanic student of mine became agitated. I could see that a question was forming in his head, and like any good teacher should, I invited him to share his thoughts.

Without missing a beat, he told the class that while it was a good thing that African-Americans were making progress with regard to civil rights, he felt that the public doesn't widely recognize the contributions of Hispanic-Americans to U.S. history. His statement gave me a momentary start, but I instantly recognized it as a credible and understandable observation.
